Flat Competition

From Saxifrage, this year's competition editor:

"He is winding the watch of his wit; by and by it will strike."

Apparently it has taken us a long time to wind this particular watch -- I apologize profusely for the delay in announcing the theme for this year's flat competition.

This year, I want to see your best Shakespeare! Parody a sonnet. Summarize the plot of your favorite play. Cast a new production with your fellow Krewe. Break out your best iambic pentameter. Whatever your preferred method, pay tribute to the Bard with your flat!

Some guidelines:

  • "Suit the action to the word, the word to the action" -- Remember that people will be solving these flats without references, so please try to use bases that don't involve a lot of obscurity.
  • "Brevity is the soul of wit," as they say. I'm not turning down flats for being too long, but the competition is timed, so people will probably appreciate shorter flats.

"Pleasure and action make the hours seem short" -- and alas, our time is quite short. The deadline for submitting flats is Sunday, June 20th. Please submit flats to saxifrage@puzzlers.org.

Test solvers:

Sax needs a couple of people to test-solve during the week of June 20; if you'd like to help, please let her know.
